Management Education: Look for Differentiators in Choosing your College

The Telugu Version of this article @ Eenadu : http://www.eenadu.net/chaduvu/chaduvuinner.asp?qry=topstory1

Management Education
Look for Differentiators to make difference to your career

As on today we have many MBA colleges across AP and in India. While we compete in the Population we do also compete in generating number of MBA/PGDBM courses across the State/India. The key differentiator for any body to take-up an MBA program would be after their work experience.

Ingredients of Choosing a Business School:

Today every college has built what is called “can be built…and no differentiator”…. but the differentiator in your success is purely the application of their knowledge to practice your career. Check for that USP(Unique Selling Proposition) which would become your USP for a great CAREER. We shall discuss about the various Ingredients that one should check before opting for a Management Institute:

Affiliation:

The students should be aware of the differences in various programs/degrees offered by Institutes in outside world. Corporate would only look for the value that they bring to the organisation in improving their business. Lets review some of the types of Affiliations from Students perspective and how they are useful.

University Affiliation: All the courses, which are built, based on University framework would have been well thought out and designed by academicians… These are the programs, which are useful for your career progression in terms of number of years of study as your progress. These programs have strict norms to be followed for delivering the framework provided by the university they are affiliated. Student would go through an almost a similar sort of exposure in such institutes.

AICTE Approved & Independent: On the other hand the PGDM courses which are approved by the AICTE as an independent body would have the ingredients of best school provided the investment is done in right direction to create a differentiation. All the IIM’s Offer PGDBM/PGP programs are government institutes having the autonomy with recognition for various higher studies. You would find a lot of flexibility in conducting an AICTE approved course and changes from college to college.

Not under The above framework: On the other hand ISB to start of is not affiliated Institute like above but the top 10 Management Schools in the world.. . not a small achievement.... however, their association and the expertise levels are far superior to any other business school in India. These are institutes, which are made for people who do not need any affiliation, as they would have achieved certain level in the organisations. The average experience of 7 years would make them only look for the best of the brains to interact and stimulate them intellectually to apply their knowledge. That is what an not affiliated in the academic framework should give to the students which the students would have gone through at least 5 years of best of their corporate life. There are many Institutes in India who are not affiliated to any University or AICTE/Govt approved like IIM’s… fresher’s with just graduation should avoid to make sure that you are better off without it.

The following key points are highlighted along with the differentiated factor for each of you to evaluate in the light of creating a great career. You may want to choose the order based on your opinion and advise from learned/knowledge sources would help you to define your future. Check for each of the following key factors for your decision making on an institute:

Key 1 : Student (You) :

The Change comes from with you and within…… The key for success of any individual is to get the RETURN on INVESTMENT in your Management Education. This is not purely because of the money that you invested, its purely how sincerely and dedicated invested your TIME too. Assessing one own self and inculcate the habits of

Differentiator: Management education is all about application, its only possible for students who constantly put in their untiring efforts in practicing the principles of management as they breath in and Breath Out. The key ingredient, which would, helps to look for the diverse backgrounds of the Students intake.

Key 2: Institutional Promoters & Credentials:

Most important for any management school is the ability and attitude of the management to invest in the Student. Not necessarily in Infrastructure but in your overall development making you a business-oriented person and taking you close to the reality of the business.

Differentiator:

The diversity and the credentials of promoters/In charge in various Businesses would help your gain that advantage as natural as your breathing. The promoters and head of institute who can stimulate a thinking process to help the ground up of any business.

Key 3: Faculty :

Important Ingredient, which makes all the difference of making you, enrich with what you gain. All the institutes would follow certain norms in terms of recruitment of faculty under the guidelines of govt./affiliating body. The profile and experience of faculty is of great importance in grooming you. The larger the experience in Academic and Industry the better the expected outcomes for your investment of life’s precious time.

Differentiator:

The more experienced with the industry the faculty, the best that you can get during your course. Industry experienced faculty make you Industry Ready product. The Diversity of the faculty from various Industries, Countries, cultures and Continents would add immense value.

Key 4 : Alumni:

The student alumni are the one who can speak volumes about the quality of Institute. The stronger the institute’s Alumni network the better you are aware of the situation outside your school. They would help you in teaching what would make a difference when you move out to build a career.

Differentiator:
The Number of Alumni come back to college to give back makes a great difference. The more number of guest faculties from your alumni would create role models live. The active the Alumni network the better it is.

Key 5: Placements:

The business school should be in a position to build you as an independent Enterprenuer first and worker/job holder later…. The most and only thing generally looked by students and advertised by the Institutes is the PLACEMENTS. However the best never focus on Placement as selling point. However, Placement record is an other yardstick for you to choose the Institute.

Differentiator:

The more entrepreneurs that the college generated with the help of Venture/Private equity companies, or created an environment of Financial support through mentoring the best brains in the Industry is the key differentiator. The more % age of people opt to be independent is the indication of business like grooming. However the %age of jobs offered could come in next.

Key 6 : Infrastructure :

Infrastructure is important to the extent it would help you to practice yourself. Just going by the rosy picture of great glass buildings, ultramodern presentation material, A/C rooms, Library, Laptop Free doesn’t just help unless they are all put to practice and build a sense of Humility. What industry is all about on the ground and zero level to start career… as you don’t serve the customers the way you are treated by the Infrastructure. Focus on an Infrastructure promotes sense of belongingness and pride in delivering a great career.

Differentiator:

Business Like environment promoting customer interface. Is the college close proximity to the Industry? Can it attract the best of the Industry brains without hardship of long travels for vacations? The infrastructure to include provides facilities to spend more time to work on assignments and industry interface.

However it’s not just the Infrastructure at college that adds value, but also your own quest for learning more when you are out of the college. Your personal computer and Internet can do a lot for your development. Doesn’t mean that you need to have your own, but at least a pool with your good friends.

Key 7: Management Development Programs:

The internal capacity of the Institute to build and run management Development Programs for Industry would make a lot of difference. This shows the capability in action of the Faculty at the Institute.

Differentiator:
The Faculty drawn from the Industry attracts best of the participants who would visit the Institute. The alumni of such programs are not only the word of mouth for the Institute but the hiring influencers for placement.

ABSOLUTE Differentiators:

Research & Publication Capability:

Management education is all about knowledge addition with application. The research helps in taking the essence of the business and summaries the finding for your knowledge addition. There are various institutes who have a separate wing for Research and lot of efforts/time/money is invested to bring about Publications. This would directly help the student to use the capability.

Industry Consulting Assignment:

This is a key differentiator directly… the more industry consulting assignments done by the Faculty the more your get back. They incubate the thoughts that are generated by the business and stimulate your thought process. You can enquire and learn more about the Industry Consulting to make sure that you are in safe hands.

Incubating Future Talent @ Campus:

There is lot of initiatives taken by Institutes currently to bring the Industry at the doorsteps to benefit the Students and ultimately help the Industry hands on. It is benefit to the industry to incubate their own talent.

Industry Back-Office @ Campus:

Think of Creating an ERP lab in association with an organisation at college and guided by an Industry expert from that Company. A sales back office to help in creating the market information and sales calls with appointment fixing would be a great value to an organisation. A HR back office which helps in creating Recruitment, Employee Relation back office created at Academic setup. Look for any infrastructure created with the help of Industry and affiliation.

Look for these initiatives by the Institute, which would create an environment of practice right under your seat.

Time allowed spending @ Industry:

Second most important thing an Institute could provide is to allow as much time as you can spend at the Industry. Look for the time allocated for the Industry oriented projects during your admission. The more beyond 50% of your time spent @ Industry would help you to gain from the practice.

Student to keep in mind always is “ If you have got a great rank or not to get into a college, All that matters from now on is your Focus and ability to extract the best out of your 2 years life invested”

Learning Attitude Helps : eenadu Career Q&A on 12.4.10

It is a good sign to see many of the youngsters who are opting to work after their graduation and pursuing their Post Graduation while working. This would always paves a way to a greater learning and appreciation of the courses that they are pursuing. Distance education would help to widen the understanding of the subject. While choosing the courses the students should take into consideration of the realities interms of the available scope to move into such specializations. This would help to utilize the course for professional career progress(promotions etc.,). Choosing distance or part-time, Executive course which would help in interacting with the other people with variety of experience. An interaction with a group of people would teach you lot more than just reading a book.
Use the power of internet and the social network to gain knowledge which is free and available at any point of time in a day.

1. I am working as an Accounts Assistant in a Paper Industry in Bobbili. I have completed my M.Com in 2002 specialization in Banking through Distance Education. Now I want to do M.B.A. in Banking. Please suggest me Is there any way to do MBA Banking in distance. Please give me the details.
- S.S.D.L.V.G.Chakravarti, Bobbili, Vijayanagaram Dist.

Today there are many distance education universities who offer a course on MBA-Finance & Banking. However, you have done your distance M.Com and now wants to do MBA in banking. You must have a goal for choosing these in pursuing your career. Sheer Distance education programs may not help you quickly… try and look for a course where there are many contact classes in your or nearby city… Also draw up a career plan in the area of work that you would like to do or improve your skills in ther future and choose the program accordingly. You can appear for the ICET this time and could opt for Andhra University or Osmania University Distance Education programs as well in Fiance area… There are many other outside universities offer either in Finance or banking… or both… you can get information on the web.

2. I am working in a Software Company. I have one year experience. But I am
intersted in stock market investments. After two years I would like to do MBA and join in the investment sector. Please give me the useful suggestion for my career.
- Sri Krishna Pendela

You have a good thought with experience and doing an MBA. Please make sure that just an investment opportunity excitement may not make a good sense for specialization. If you have a specific focus on stock market related career you can opt for Finance specialization with focus on Investment banking, Stock Market operations exposure, projects, mini projects during your MBA program. There are many private investment companies/Business Consulting companies are also providing opportunities for enthusiasts like you.. that may be a good option too…

3. I am doing MBA (Finance). What type of projects help us in future career. Please give some topics for mini projects?
- Mayuri Reddiboyina

MBA projects are basically to improve the skill levels on the subject that you study. One thing you should keep in mind that you should do a project which is unique in your university and not done by many of the students earlier. You must take a project, which is useful to the company based on your observations and findings. Your ability to understand the issue, explore the information, expertise knowledge acquisition, Reporting and recommendation should make it a project in real terms. You can pickup an organisation and check for the need which should be base for your project. However, while choosing the project make sure that you identify the company based on the business. Eg: A project financing model for an sme, Going for an IPO for a company… such practical issues may help..

4. I want to do MBA from a good college in Tamilnadu. Please let me know admission details there? What are good MBA colleges in Tamilnadu?
- Ramesh, Hyderabad

Dear Ramesh,
There are many Institutes of repute in Tamilnadu… There are good Institutes like REC(NIT), IIT, Anna University offers courses… Apart from them the other universities in chennai and coimbatore would be a great place for learning. Most of them use the CAT, MAT,JMET, TANCET and Others depending on the Institute. There are institutes who focus on prior work experience for MBA/PGDM/PGP based on the course.

5. I completed my BTech (cse) in 2009 with 70%. Now i am doing PGDM 2nd sem
in Badruka, Hyderabad. Which specialization should i prefer? Most of the people saying that for BTech people and males HR is not good. But I am intersted in that. We have only 3 options (HR, MARKETING, FINANCE) please give me a suggestion.
- Chanikya Vibhushan

Dear Chanikya, You must do what you feel is right and good for you. Do not let other’s thinking deter your decision. That’s a very common notion of people typecast HR for females looking at the only soft nature of the transactions which may be 20% and males are capable equally… Rest is business focus to bring best in people. Infact the person answering now is a male and have done an extremely good job in HR… With such thinking there are great opportunities for males candidates to make good progress in future in HR career. However, remember when you do a PGDM/MBA you are more prepared to handle business and all the specializations become incidental to choose a path…

Job or Education (29.3.10) Eenadu Career Q&A by GR Reddy

Original version in Telugu Can be accessed at : http://eenadu.net/chaduvu/chaduvuinner.asp?qry=topstory7

Many Parents live in the past like how they did pursue their careers. Gone are the days where we would do all the studies and then look for a job. It’s important to have work experience during or after graduation. To sustain and build a career in this environment where there is immense competition with high intellectuals and generation Y. Practical experience is what counts for climbing organizational hierarchies than just a qualification. Add the flavor of organizational experience to your studies then you shine.

1. My son completed B.Tech. (CSE) and got selected by Infosys through placements. He got 13900 Rank in GATE. We are in confusion to make a decision on choosing M.Tech. and Job? pls suggest?
- Suresh Babu Pulluru

Dear Suresh Garu,
I appreciate your initiative to seek help for your son… Its very common that our parents want us to study till PG (which is old school of thought)… Today’s world is competitive you never know what would be a corporate scenario in future. There should not be any confusion in your decision. In current times Getting on the job and understanding organizations are priority and gives wider scope of thinking to your son… After 2 years of experience he would be in a position to take better option of doing further studies, which may be totally different than what you are thinking at this point of time(MBA or other Specializations) which are good for career progression. That’s good for him to choose which he feels good for him based on the knowledge and exposure that he would get by then. I wish him all the best for his journey into corporate.

2. I am doing my MBA (Marketing) final year. I want to do a project now. Which Topics / sectors / areas are good for Marketing students for projects?
- K. Johnson, Hyderabad

Dear Johnson,
Your exploratory nature of this question would help you go long way… Projects are part of your study to get to the actual business scenario and experience and experiment yourself. The projects you choose should be emerging out of your work exposure. Look for companies who are looking at some of the work delivery and you can convert that into a project title. Service based organizations would give you much more challenging opportunities to learn. Your title of the project should be unique and not one part of the crowd where bundles of projects done every year similarly by students in the universities. Customer interfacing projects would give you lot of learning than sitting back office or on Internet. Please focus on SME organizations that would not restrict you for project scope. Many large organizations would not have a policy due to the efforts that they have to invest in fresh talent… You can reach this Career Clinic’s Free helpline: 9603016222 for any advise on projects support(subba rao garu this is our CSR support for students, if you wish to publish this part).

3. I completed my B.Com in 2009 and pursuing M.Com. I am interested in accounting and finance fields and like to work in india or abroad. I am planning to do ICWA, but doesn't know how it helps my career? Whats the best step now to plan my career and which course should I take up? What are the career skills required?
- Moksha Mangalagiri

Dear Moksha,
Your investment further should be in Accounting & Finance experience would help you decide and take right decision. You need to look for an opportunity to work in an organisation even if its part-time. Adding degrees would not give you opportunity if you want to work domestic/abroad. Experience always comes first after a base graduation. Alternatively focus on ICWA would help you while working in Accounting practice – This needs a great dedication in studies and the rigor of ICWA along with practical knowledge. The skills of Communication, Interpersonal skills, team working kind of skills are developed only by work experience.

4. I have completed MHRM and at present working as HR executive in a reputed organization. I like to continue my studies further. I want to do Psychoogy Course through correspondence. Does it support my further career? OR pls suggest any HR supported courses.
- Krishnam Raju, Vizag

Appreciate for your enthusiasm to build your knowledge while working.. A course in psychology would give you inputs for better handling of situations in HR work. This may not directly add value but it would help you in improving your ability to adapt to new situations by understanding them better, this also helps in improving your employee counseling capabilities. The other courses you can look at Diploma in Training & Development from Indian society for training and development (ISTD). You can try some of the online courses offered by reputed institutions which have interactive model in teaching. Wish you a great learning time ahead.

5. I did my Intermediate with MPC and B.A. in Graduation. I am going to appear for ICET. What course is suitable for me between MBA and MCA? Which is the best among these?
- SK. Anwar Basha, Macherla

Dear Anwar,
As always any MBA without experience of 1-2 years may not help you much. You can appear for the ICET and may opt for a distance education/part-time MBA mode while start working in any organisation right away. Investing in MCA for 3 years may not be a right choice at this point of time and the situation of business outside. You should get into an organisation to get work experience and which helps you to take right decisions in career ahead.

is most close to your teaching field, but I doubt how a distance
education mode would help you in that… Plan your career as per above

have mastered in one field and really in a position to influence
organizations. However without much of details about your background

moved to technology it may be of help… otherwise please review your
long-term plans quickly and see how ICWA would help you.. You can
approach any person who is in Accounting and Costing who can help you

Cheers on Campus Placement Myth or Reality

English version of my article in Eenadu on 25.1.10

YEAR 2010 = MORE VALUE FOR MONEY @ CAMPUS

The year 2009 has proved difficult to every organisation, student and people at large interms of the financial outlook and buying behavior. This would have a definite impact on the business at large. There are many Industries have corrected and scaled down their expected sales/profits keeping the overall scenario in mind. While there is a wait and watch approach in the business scenario and consumer behaviour… that would definitely impact

Impact on Organisations with respect to Campus :

While campus hiring was one of the cost effective method for organisations, when it has come to the cost cutting, the campus recruitment was one of the key thing effected last year.. However, the organizational growth is always dependent on the fresh talent to create a future pool. The organisations would start looking at to recruit talent not specifically only from the campus but through various other sources.

What influences the colleges:
- Positioning of the college as a favorite for Industry would be a greater challenge.
- There are new age colleges which would influence the positioning of each of the existing colleges
- Need to invest in grooming the students in a practical environment
- Need to invest in hiring the teaching staff more from the industry to build the competency in students.
- Just a personality development courses by fresh consultants would not help.. Colleges need to build relations with Industry experts to bring the change in personality of the students
- They would be forced to look at the alumni list from last several years to identify any influencers for brining their company to the campus. Or alternatively to send the profiles to alumni’s to seek support from their companies.

* Any changes in companies attitude towards campus recruitments and
other forms of hiring.

Companies’ perspective:

Companies are looking at to do just in time hiring for any positions. The screening process would be to identify and hire people with most suitable qualification, experience and attitude. This is going increase the number of people screened for a single position. (Eg. Earlier the average selection at campus was ranging from 1: 100-200… this may go up but with specific focus on screening with lots of terms attached.

Few trends expected to serve the organizations to do the campus cost effectively:

- Short listing based on the Academics and called at company location for Hiring Process.
- Pooling of multiple campuses @ one single campus.
- Online testing (aptitude & behavioral), Technical Testing
- Web-Based Personal Interviewing
- Pickup people from the grooming institutes who specialized to build competencies for the organisation.

Each of the above would have impact on the selection process where by the best in everything only can survive.

What’s there in this Year :

* Present year placement scenario comparing with the last year (across important disciplines of Engineering, Management, Manufacturing and others)

Organizations are looking at to hire this year but the numbers may not be as encouraging or as equivalent to those of previous years. The campus placement is conducted by mostly the large organisation who recruit in bulk at any point of time. The numbers are expected to be based on the recovery scenario the entire year may be half of the 2008 figures. Purely due to the conscious efforts and also the various points discuss in the Table attached and productivity and Cost parameters.

The industry realized the need for the best of the management graduates however the story outside is that Management Graduates are almost equivalent to those of Graduates. As the last year every graduate passed gone into PG thinking to beat the recession. There are more postgraduates available for campus than before. The expectations on the Management Graduates would be to add value to the business and those who can provide that comfort to the organizations would help themselves.

Since there was a domestic consumption is large for our country, the India based manufacturing and sales organizations done well with a little bit of difficulty due to the purchase power of people. However, they continue to be the consumers of Fresh Talent as normal (may not be only through CAMPUS). Many Manufacturing organizations do not have a clear-cut policy on the campus recruitment while hiring the resources after their graduation/pg.

The SME segment would be the largest consumer of the Fresh Graduates / Post Graduates / Management Graduates this year. The clear reason is that if they have survived during the recession due to their low cost of operations, overheads they can sustain the continuity of business effectively.

Future prospect of placements (for 1-2 years)
- We can expect a positive change in the trend of hiring over next few years from corporates.
- More hiring is expected from the SME’s at the Campuses who are willing to build relation and create great companies of the future.
- The SME’s who made their mark in the year of recession and created niche for themselves would be the trendsetters for the hiring practices. This is due to the nature of the business and the complexities to growth that they would have experienced during great recession. They have proved to be the good to survive hence can take the front seat in defining the future.
- The placements @ campus would be dominated by the large organizations who want to improve their strengths this year, however there would be sudden growth in SME hiring from campuses over next two years. It is estimated to have 20-30% hiring comes from the SME’s of India who are the key for our overall GDP growth.
- Industry expected to

The Attitude of Future:

- Not just positive but a proven Positive Attitude to Get in to the organisation. Students who have an attitude to build and sustain their competitive advantage are the one who are going to get the bigger pie. Sustaining the competitiveness is through continuous learning, learning from experienced, self-learning, group learning and adapting various learning methods to acquire and enhance knowledge and practice continuously.

Impact of NASSCOM Guidelines on hiring the Engineering graduates only during 8th semester :

- This time had to come… All the IT companies have gone overboard in hiring people much much before than any business can absorb in a mad rush to showcase their manpower strength. It would have really helped in the pre-recession scenario in making their stock prices go up, however the Recession has taught a lesson to the Investors that hiring in advance is adding cost to their investments…
- IT Industry would anyway would follow these guidelines as they have been badly effected by the advance hiring…
- Possible change would happen is that the organisation who have not had a practice of Project Training would now consider seriously.
- The Non-IT Industry has always hired few numbers from the campus which is based on an exact forecast details which are available from the industry existence.

Specific guidelines for Engineering and MBA students for 2010

- Work like a placement officer to get a good job this year as it needs two hands to clap a great career for yourself.
- Approach the organizations with confidence to deliver what the industry requires.
- Focus on Project based appointments than just a direct placement
- Attitude with a difference who understands business and adds value to revenue and profit.
- Focus on the SME organizations for placement
- Do a through research on the organisation before meeting
- Use personal or professional references to reach the organsiations

CAMPUS IMPACT ANALYSIS PRE & POST RECESSION

The following analysis for your information and for making right informed decisions of career...

Each point is discussed as the Impact Area with inputs on Pre-Recession & Post Recession

Business
All Businesses were able to build the value and the expected growth. Excessive spending on IT and Manpower. Hence the IT companies have benefited world over. All Businesses are conscious about the expectations on the growth. Due to the change in environment they are conscious about projection of growth of Business.

Planning Manpower
Organizations could build buffer/excess manpower at lower levels with expectations on increased business growth year on year. Eg: IT companies maintained 15-30% based on the services provided. Construction industry 5-10% at lower level added to build future capacity.
Every organisation cut down on the manpower at all levels with increased focus on Productivity per resource. Also the recruitment of Freshers as just-in-time basis.

Timing / Hiring Dates A well forecasted plans were drawn to hire people well in time. Engineering Graduate requirements estimated 1 year in advance. Other positions 6-8 months in advance. Quarter on Quarter review of requirements and hiring decisions are made. Hiring only based on the requirement. Final Year students can expect only just before final year exams or immediately after that.
Hiring Numbers
More numbers hired from campus considering the Dropouts due to International studies / locational constraints and also the new joinee attrition within 6 months of joining. Purely needbased and project based hiring from Campuses. Just in Time or Open Campus selection to have a better pool.

College Selection
With References and past history. New colleges were visited due to the manpower crunch interms of good quality. Experimented with any college which has got some good numbers and the institute management made efforts to reach the organisation. Its time that the colleges comeup with new innovative ways of training and grooming their students to the needs of the Industry. Any industry based orientation / projects done by students would attract the organisations.
Screening
Screening done to achieve the number of offers. Slightest potential identified in the resource have been hired. There was a time available with organizations to tolerate the training cycle for resource grooming. 50-60% in GD Interviews were considered. Its going to be tough with the focus on the exact requirement is sought from the pool. Nothing less than 70%-90% performance in the Test/GD & Personal Interaction Scores.

Skills
- Communication
- Team Work
- Adaptability
- Learning
- Positive Attitude -
To expectations as
- Business Understanding
- Technical/Function experience through assignments
- Multi-tasking
- Expertise in the job requirements

Compensation
- Hiked / revised every year of Campus recruitment.
- May go with the similar and marginal increase based on the pool / college / areas of specialization.

Post Joining 4Expectations
- Training
- Training & Then
- On-The-Job
Now:
- Actual Job assignment
- On-the-Job-Productive
- To deliver the goods from the day one of the joining.

Resource Availability @ MARKET

More openings and reasonable number of colleges with few good resources and competition challenge with competitors. - More number of people
- Candidates from 2008 onwards available.
- More colleges whereby doubling the capacity of resources available.

Social Impact
15% of the employable candidates available. Parents were eagerly waiting for their kids to be placed and there begins a new life for the efforts put in once they are selected…
- There is an increased pressure on the students/job aspirants and especially from the people who have not got a good placement for whatever the reasons in last few years and they start competing with 2010 freshers like more freshers.
- Large entry-level job seekers with within the social pressure cooker.
